SOLD 1959 RHD Karmann Ghia Type 14 Coupe ‘Lacey’

As seen in September Volksworld magazine With a heavy heart I have decided to Sell Lacey my 1959 Volkswagen Karmenn ghia lovingly restored by Pete Morley at Californian classics. Pete nicknamed her lacey as after her being sand blasted there was so many holes it looked like lace! Pete had the car through covid and fabricated everything and bought a donor car for other parts, no stone was left unturned and every part was lovingly restored back to the original specifications in the finest detail, This car is amazing and runs like a dream and is like a brand new car. This model was only made for six months after the lowlight and is an original right hand drive in black so she is a very rare beast and possibly the first of the production line in this colour and right hand drive. I got the birth certificate from vw and restored it as it came off the production line in 1959. This car went to South Africa and then came back to the UK and sat in a barn for some 20 years and even suffered a fire to the rear end. Lacey has 54000 odd original miles on the clock and just over 2000 since I got her back two years ago. All numbers on the car are matching so this is one original car. If you have any questions regarding the car then please let me know and I will do my best to answer.

SOLD 1966 LHD Karmann Ghia Type 14 Coupe

Year of Manufacture: 1966. Imported from California, USA
UK registered: 16th October 2003
Tax: Currently SORN
Engine: 1600cc twin port
Mileage: 45,000 miles (Taken from last MOT certificate)

I’ve owned the car since 2005, with 1 UK owner before me, the original importer. I used it as my daily driver up to 2011 when corrosion to the body work became too serious to ignore. At this point I SORN’d the car and made arrangements for a phased restoration. The first phase has been completed which involved attending to all the problems with the body work and a respray to the roof and body. All work has been completed by a professional coachworks and paint shop.

The next phase was to reinstall the interior and have the engine overhauled. However, a lack of time and interest means the project has come to a halt. This is a beautiful car that deserves passing on to a dedicated enthusiast with the knowledge and time to really enjoy and complete the restoration.

The vehicle is currently dry stored at a classic car garage in West Yorkshire. If you would like to meet up and view the car and have a chat please contact me and we can organise this.

If you want any further information about the vehicle just get in touch. I can happily provide:

  • Detailed spreadsheet of all the external and internal parts in my possession
  • A photo gallery of the restoration work, plus all the parts listed in the spreadsheet

SOLD 1970 LHD Karmann Ghia Type 14 Cabriolet

Reluctantly selling our very solid 1970’s Texas import KG convertible project.
The car has been dry stored since we bought it, and it has an extensive folder of history from the day it was originally purchased and includes the all important Nova documents, and the VAT and import tax has been paid.
The panels require minimal welding and as can be seen from the attached pictures the bodywork is in terrific condition, so potentially an inexpensive restoration to turn this into an amazing car.
The engine and gearbox look original to the car, but neither have been tested, and it’s not currently a running or driving car.
In addition I have a new floor pan its not your cheap Brazilian made one, as well as a long list of parts including:
1. White Cabrio Headliner
2. Chrome side trim rails
3. Pair of black vinyl door cards with pockets
4. Pair of white Hinge covers
5. Wiring loom
6. RH door mirror
7. LH door mirror
8. Seal, door Hinge pillar left
9. Seal, door Hinge pillar right
10. Seal, door left
11. Rear louver trim
12. Pair door glass to Windshield frame seals.
13. Top frame to door glass Seal (4 pieces).
14. 4 x s/steel moon hub caps
15. Handbrake rubber boot cover
16. Latch visor x 2
These aren’t new:
17. Original steering wheel and chrome horn
18. Original Blaupunkt Emden B7 VW radio with Bluetooth receiver
19. Front seat sponge
I would like to sell the whole lot as one package, but also willing to sell the car and pan separately priced at £9k and £2k respectively and of course open to offers.
Both are currently being stored near Rugby, CV21.

SOLD 1969 LHD Karmann Ghia Type 14 Coupe

1969 Karmann Ghia Coupe, desirable model as has the IRS rear suspension so handles better than earlier models, and also front disc brakes.
Was magazine featured in Volksworld (Sept 1996) when it had undergone restoration by Karmann Konnection, including a respray in the original colour of Oriole Yellow, and the roof in an off white. (I have photos of the strip down, panel work, and rebuild)
It also had the front end lowered on sway away adjusters, and a set or rare Lemmerz Sprint star steel wheels were added, as well as real Empi GT centre caps (super rare and not easy to find). Even the spare wheel is a Lemmerz with matching centre cap. The rear suspension is also slightly lowered.
The engine is a recon unit that I estimate has covered about 12, 000 miles from the history/invoices that form part of the extensive history file.
The interior was refitted with a TMI repro set of seat covers and door panels, and goes nicely with the off white roof colour. It has the original brown carpets, and features a centre tunnel console, and a rare Empi VDM steering wheel with a T2 Samba horn push. (The rare extras on the car are worth about £2k on their own)
It appears from the MOT history and the paperwork that the car was used very little from 2000 up to it’s MOT last March, which shows that it had covered just 2 miles. It looks like it was in dry storage for all that time. It was recommissioned in 2021 with all new fuel lines, fuel pump, brakes serviced, new tyres, new gearbox mounts, new clutch, flywheel, gland nut and main crank oil seal, carburettor serviced, new rocker gaskets, valve timing adjusted, oil changed, and normal service items.
It’s also had a set of co co style floor mats, front luggage/bonnet liner (expensive high quality repro identical to original), new genuine VW pedal rubbers. I also fitted a set of taper tip exhaust tips as were fitted to the car in 1996.
The car is very close to how it looked when featured in 1996, save that the paintwork does have some blistering (but no rust evident) around the nose and a little around the headlamps. This not detract from what is a very solid attractive car that drives as it should, and puts a smile on my face every time I drive it.
I am a serious VW collector and want to buy an early Karmann Ghia.

Recently used on a weeks driving holiday where she started first time every-time, never missed a beat, turned heads and is a dream to cruise in. SOLD 1969 LHD Karmann Ghia Coupe ‘Mango’

For sale is a desirable 1969 model Karmann Ghia coupe. Considered by many the best year of production as it features disc brakes up front whilst still benefiting from the smaller bullet front indicators and smaller rear lenses.
The paintwork is a gloss black roof over a mango body and is a solid 9 out of 10 as can be seen by the reflections in the photographs.
The car had undergone an extensive restoration in the States by the previous owner prior to me importing her earlier this year. Everything works as it should…… even the clock ticks away!! One key operates the ignition and locks.
The 1500 single port engine pulls along effortlessly and shifts through the gears with ease. MOT’d until April 2022 despite it being MOT and Tax exempt.
All the fuel lines have been replaced with new SAE J30 R9 hoses and held in place by the correct fuel line clips.
A new fuel filter has been added outside of the engine bay. The carb has been sonically cleaned and rebuilt and sits on top of a new inlet manifold.
The exhaust is also new as well as a couple of brake line hoses. The charging system also benefits from an alternator upgrade.
The windscreen washers have also been upgraded to an electrically powered bottle, which is operated through the original switch thanks to the addition of a micro switch.
The car benefits from a new set of stainless-steel bumpers, clear front lenses as well as genuine white wall tyres all round.
There is a modern stereo which power a coupe of speakers seated in purpose built footwell units.
The seats have also been upgraded to half electric Porsche seats for added comfort.

SOLD 1971 LHD Karmann Ghia Type 14 Coupe

1971 Karmann Ghia Type 14 Coupe LHD in WhiteI bought the car early 2012 through a specialist Karmann Ghia workshop – at the time I was told the car was imported from the US in the early nineties, renovated but then went into storage around 2000 before being put back on the road for sale when I bought it. Since then, I bare metalled the floor pan inside and out, had a section replaced and then treated with POR15 and a coat of chassis guard underneath. Apart from that it has been more minor projects tidying up the interior etc. The car has been used regularly but lightly. It has been very reliable – only not starting on occasions before I got the battery isolator installed to protect the charge or when I inadvertently disconnected the starter motor.

In my ownership it has always had an MOT until this last November when due to pandemic practicality I declared the car MOT exempt. It has only failed once – a couple of years ago when it needed a small welding repair in one of the front wheel arches.

I’ve really enjoyed my 9 years of ownership but I’m short of time and space and feel I’ve taken the car as far as I can. It deserves a new owner as it reaches its 50th birthday!
I think the car generally presents well but definitely has its problem areas which I’ve tried to capture in the pictures: rust round headlights, rusting on the rear of the sills, rust along the bottom edge of the engine lid, rusted rear bumper mount cover. Also the paint is slightly pitted in areas – I think this is visible in the close up of the engine lid vents. There are also some minor scratches and chips in the paint work in other places but not attributable to rust.

The paint is white but as you can see in the pictures under the bonnet, it was originally yellow.
I would suggest this is a good honest car in need of some TLC! I’m happy to answer questions and I will point out everything I’ve learnt about the car to anyone who comes to inspect.

SOLD 1965 LHD Karmann Ghia Type 34 Coupe “Razoredge” – Project(complete)

This is a very solid Type 34 that needs finishing. I bought this car last year from Simon Mann of KGOC as a project but find I now need the cash.
It was imported from California and has been soda blasted to bare metal and painted with rust inhibitor (hence the dark colour).
It was originally ivory with a red interior but at some point repainted red. Minor welding is complete – the rear N/S wing has been replaced as have the front and rear lower panels either side of the sills. The car has been subtly lowered and has air shocks on the front (see photo of car with red paint, as imported, to see how it sits on the road)
The car is pretty much complete. One part known to be missing is one of the quarter windows.
The bumpers are of very good driver quality, as is the majority of the bright work.
The car has euro spec headlights as in the pictures, all of the scripts and an ignition switch.
The floor pans are nice and solid.
The car has a later UO code engine (not in the car) and a Freeway Flyer gearbox. The brakes have been overhauled, and loosened off and I can push the car around easily.
The car is registered on the NOVA system, I have the certificate, along with the original title from the previous owner.
Since acquiring the car I have completed the upholstery (red), having matched the fabric and have acquired a full set of carpets (inc boot liners etc) and much of the tinware has been painted- now all shiny black and ready to go. The engine bay is now painted (ivory) and the gauges have been refurbished.
The car is in Penzance and I can provide more photos of any part of the car on request. You are welcome to visit and have a good look at everything… but driving it may be a challenge!

SOLD 1965 LHD Karmann Ghia Type 34 Coupe Sunroof  “Razoredge”

This Type 34 imported into the country from South Africa and then put through an MOT. This was in 2015 and it has been off the road ever since. It is being sold as a project and although it needs a lot of work it is best described as solid but scruffy.
It has had some repairs done in the past to a decent standard but now requires some work to the floor at the rear and the inner sills below the a-pillar – nothing ridiculous though.
It is one of the super rare sunroof models making it a Type 345 but the mechanism is far from complete.
The engine is from a type 1 and it has four lug wheels fitted but the rest of the mechanicals are believed to be original.
The car comes with its birth certificate showing that is was originally white with a black roof – personally my favourite combination.
The windscreen is cracked but it comes with an original replacement and It has a spare original rear window as well.
The rear arches have been flared and, if not to your taste, the Jurgen Magdelyns made replacements are included.
In terms of missing items the previously mentioned sunroof mechanism, radio grill, the chrome seat side trim, front overriders, engine cover and one of the sun visors are all no longer present.
I have the import Nova papers but it was not registered with the DVLA after the last MOT as the previous owner concentrated on his other T34.

The car is near Aberdeen and I can provide photos of any part of the car on request.

SOLD 1973 LHD Karmann Ghia Type 14 Coupe

It’s a turn key car that you can drive away. It’s best described as a decent ongoing project that can be enjoyed as you drive and restore to suit.
It’s tax and mot exempt.
Interior needs a new dash and face, it’s not missing any controls, clock is compete with the extra piece in back but needs to serviced to make it work.
passenger seat needs stuffing and leather work.
Both seats work on the runners and slide, Both seats lock well.

Pans are very good for the age with no major work being undertaken.
When I received the car it had recently been imported from California.
Im the second UK owner since being imported.
It was given to evil Ben’s to cavity inject and protect the pan.
Driver and passenger footwells cleaned up very well and recently Por15 to protect them.
Heater channels very good, heat exchangers work.
The old headliner has been removed, the headliner bows are inside.
Roof internally will need treating and new sound deadening fitting.
Included in sale is a brand new boxed headliner from TMI
The inside of the car is remarkably solid but most of the higher seals have failed.
Internally its a factory 2 seater and never came with rear seats. A small bench has been put in but needs some carpet.
Parcel shelf has some small surface rust but this was going to be tackled once rear glass was removed.

Included in the sale is over 600 pounds worth of new seals from California Classics
Front and rear screen, pop outs door tops and surrounds.
Hood has a brand new seal already fitted.

This car has some very small surface rust on front hood, some very small chips and dents can be seen on the exteria.
The front has a small debt in nose and fenders need some touching up paint wise.

Strong 1600 tp engine with twin del 40s rejetted and fitted by Nigel Allen.
Stainless Steel exhaust,
Heat exchangers work so you have hot air.
Push rods need changing and currently no thermostat or flaps in place.
Does not affect how the car runs and its happily gone to the pod and back from Cornwall.

Car has been resprayed over its original paint in its previous Californian life.
Paint is looking tired and flaking in some areas. I personally think it should be taken back to original paint.
Does polish up ok though, front seal was replaced and paint again needs touching up around the front screen. My plan was to remove all glass this winter, have car taken back to og paint and blended before doing the headliner.
Rear window has tiny bubble which would have been addressed when fitting new seal.
Front Apron is solid
New breaks all round.
Drop spindles on the front. Brand new Adjustable plates on the rear.
Nice grant steering wheel fitted, horn needs wiring in. Wipers work, washer bottle needs connecting up and will require new lines.
Car to be sold with og spindles, backing plates. Plus a few miscellaneous bits to finish the ongoing restoration.
I have plenty of pictures and can ask any questions.
Comes on og vw steels. This car is incredible for the amount of genuine parts still on it and when you get looking the vw stamps are everywhere.

The underside has been cleaned oiled and cavities sprayed by Evil Ben’s workshop.

Anything I took off the car I will include when I sell as I feel its important the car leaves with everything to put it back to stock if required.
This would include the original engine bits and correct spindles, some other rear tail lights and housings. Og steering wheel, rear plates, 1600 manifold from engine.

Im in possession of the last American plate, I don’t have much other history but a file full of receipts and invoices.
1 key.
The price is £10k with the new seals and anything mentioned above.

I do have some other bits which I can add to a deal if a higher price is negotiated.

My reason for sale is I’m saving for a classic camper.

I’m not trying to hide anything and all inspections are welcome.

I’ll ask any questions and can send more pictures. Solid car, drivable, ongoing head turning car.

Blue-White Roof (L289) over Sea Blue (L360) with original Ice Blue Interior.
A well-known Type 34 and published on T34 World as a “Model Ambassador” https://www.t34world.org/1964 “These 1964 models are some of the best original restored T34s in the world today.  They have original interiors, stock height, original rims/wheels, and have been carefully preserved”.

The Type 34 was built from September 1961 to July 1969 during that 8 year period only 42,505 were built and of those it is estimated only 5,525 were RHD. There are thought to be only around 2,500 Type 34s left with only an estimated 200 RHDs left in the World this being one of them. None were officially exported to the USA.

The Type 34 was Volkswagen’s flagship model of the entire Volkswagen range of the ‘60’s. It was the most expensive VW available, the fastest, and the most luxurious. It was fitted with such standard equipment as a cigar lighter, an electric clock, locking steering column, front and rear vent windows, variable wiper controls and a luxurious interior. It was one of the first production cars that you could order with an electrically operated sliding sunroof. It also had the distinction of being the only VW fitted with built in fog lights.

Manufactured with a beautifully hand crafted body on a standard Type 3 chassis and running gear with the 1964 model year being the first year when the new more powerful 54hp “S” engine was fitted. It has dual carburettors, domed-topped pistons with a higher compression ratio and was capable of 100mph. The Type 34 Karmann Ghia was marketed and aimed at the luxury end of the market.

This carefully preserved car is one of the best “original restored T34s in the World today” with “original interiors, stock height, original rims/wheels, and have been carefully preserved”.

The car comes with an extensive history file with MOT Certificates dating as far back as 1967 and receipts dating as far back as 1973 together with tax discs, some articles including a copy of VolksWorld magazine June 2007 when there was a 5 page feature “Look Sharp” with the car referred to on the front cover as “could this be the best Type 3 Ghia in the UK?” it also comes with some charming memorabilia including a pristine copy of the car’s English version of the original Sales Brochure as well as an English version of the Karmann Ghia Sales brochure from the era.

The car that has had several club members in it’s history was previously owned. Chris Wright restored the car around 2007 including having a replica 1600 engine block made and used all the original parts from the original car. The car was subject to a full respray with all the original parts being reinstalled.

Due to its rarity this car is an appreciating classic that is also sublime and having covered only 77,000 is a joy to drive and as well as being a very unusual and rare it’s an extremely usable and comfortable classic car.

Imported from California in the summer of 2019 – Registered here 1.10.19 with the help of Californian Classics St Leonards on Sea who carried out mainly cosmetic work, including new carpets, seals, radio etc.

There are some areas where some TLC would help her cosmetically.  She was resprayed to front and passenger side but not the boot or drivers side. She drives really well.  The only hiccup has been the fuse was blowing for the indicators, fuel gauge and lights.  This seems to have been rectified by putting a larger fuse in and not using the radio, albeit a new one.

She is this wonderful buttercup yellow and is a pleasure to drive. A bit of a head turner!
